Teeth Whitening To Remove Stains

You have probably seen several advertisements for various commercial teeth whitening products. Even if you haven’t, you’ve seen dozens of them on the shelves in the toothpaste aisle.

Do these commercial whitening products work? The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs took a close look at the different kinds of whitening products you can buy. Without getting too technical, here’s what the council concluded.

Whitening toothpaste can remove surface stains, but it is not really effective at removing deep set-in stains from your teeth. Whitening gels and strips (which contain bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) can get some of those deeper stains.

However, commercial products are nowhere near as powerful as professional teeth whitening products, like PureWhite and KöR Whitening. You can find both of these at Family First Dental & Implant Center.

According to the ADA council, professional teeth whitening products can be up to 11 times stronger than the stuff you can find at a retail store. Professional teeth whitening can do in a single sitting what it may take months for commercial whitening products to do. (Although the ADA council also warns against overuse of commercial whitening products since using them too often can damage your teeth.)

Call 703-297-4353 if you would like to learn more about either of our teeth whitening systems.

Dental Veneers To Create A New Smile

The goal of teeth whitening is to remove the deep stains from your teeth. Dental veneers solve the stained teeth problem in a completely different way.

Instead of removing stains from otherwise healthy teeth, dental veneers create a shell that hides the stains instead.

Veneers are custom-made to fit over your teeth. They can be shaded to be as white as you would like them to be, so you can the whitest, brightest smile that you’ve ever had.

We offer both porcelain and “no-prep” veneers. With porcelain veneer, a thin layer of enamel is removed from your teeth to create room for your veneers to fit. No-prep veneers, like DURAthin and Lumineers, are so thin that we can often place them without touching your enamel.

Our dentists can help you decide which veneers are right for you, and dental veneers can do more than whiten your smile. Veneers can close gaps between your teeth, restore chipped teeth to their full size, and make your smile look perfectly straight.

Should You Try Teeth Whitening Or Get Veneers?

The ultimate decision is up to you, but our dentists can give you the information you need to make the right choice.

An important factor in your decision is the cause your discolored teeth.

Stained teeth develop normally over years and years of drinking our morning coffee, iced tea, wine, and soft drinks. Foods that are rich in color can be tasty, but they also can leave behind small traces that add to our stains as well.

Professional teeth whitening is an excellent option to remove those stains.

But what if your teeth are discolored for another reason?

You may have dark teeth as a result of an injury. Maybe you had an illness that affected the color of your teeth, or your teeth changed color as a side effect of medication. Maybe the enamel of your teeth has worn down, making the yellow layer of dentin beneath it more visible.

In these situations, dental veneers are the better choice for restoring your pearly white smile.

Our dentists can examine your teeth and explain your options. Our goal is to help you find the treatment that will give you the smile you are happy to see each morning.
